Blog # 3

The article I chose for the summary-response essay is “Most of town’s residences say they support solution” from McClatchy Newspapers Staff Writer (no author). This article is primarily about Mexican immigrants who are coming across the United States border, illegally. The article starts out talking about an American family who has farmed along the U.S.-Mexico border since 1918 in Columbus, New Mexico. The family has been bombarded with illegal immigrants trying to cross their farm in order to seek refuge in the United States. The immigrants have used the farm as a path to Interstate 10, and have in turn ruined many of the farms crops, trampling on anything that is in their way. Fortunately, The Border Patrol is coming up with solutions to fix these problems many Americans who live on the boarder are facing.  “The Border Patrol erected a three- mile fence around Columbus. In the town, nearly everyone approached by McClatchy Newspapers said the fence and stepped-up enforcement are working.” (Most of town’s residences say they support solution 1).  The author says that while Americans favored the idea of this fence, many Hispanic residences accepted the borders efficiency, but said it was divisive.
After reading this article on immigration, I think it is essential to build fences around the United States boarder. The first step to solving our illegal immigration problem is to secure the border. The Census Bureau estimates that over 500,000 illegal aliens enter the United States every year. With the right equipment, infrastructure, manpower, technology, and freedom to do our jobs, we can secure our borders. Allowing this high number of immigrants into the United States not only overpopulates our country, but also creates fewer jobs for Americans. Companies will hire illegal immigrants because it is cheap labor and they can get away with giving their workers an extremely low salary, which is under the table. Entering this country without permission is a crime and fencing helps secure our nation’s borders because criminal activity has been eliminated or decreased. What was once an easy border to cross, susceptible to illegal aliens, drug trafficking and terrorism, is now the standard mode in preventing drug smugglers from bringing narcotics into our neighborhoods and allowing border enforcement personnel to reinforce areas of greater need. The author brings about many good points in this article because it is unfair that American farmers, who are just trying to do their job, are being bombarded with illegal immigrants daily.  Fences will eliminate crime I believe, and stop the flow of drugs coming in and out of the United States from Mexico.
